In the Fall of 2010, I was working on a few paintings as practice. My son, W, noticed I was using a picture from our last beach trip as inspiration. The photograph was of W and his friend Z.
At the time of the painting, Z’s father was undergoing treatment for a brain tumor/cancer. W asked me if we could give the painting to Z when it was finished. This of course melted my heart. And we of course gave Z the painting. Later Z told me it was his “most awesomest gift.” But actually, I was the one to receive the gift. To see his face light up with that smile during such a difficult time was wonderful. Z’s painting became the first of many “gift” paintings I do. It is incredibly rewarding to create a painting for someone who needs a bright spot in their day.
